Amy Byerley, PhD (She/Her/Hers), is a licensed psychologist with diverse training and clinical experiences in health psychology, pediatric, and developmental psychology. She grew up in Niles, Michigan. A science geek with an initial interest in botany, she opted to pursue a career integrating science and people. Plants felt too solitary.
Dr. Byerley earned her MA degree in Counseling and PhD in Psychology from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She completed her predoctoral internship in school psychology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. She fell in love with the people, the culture, and music/art/architecture in New Orleans and will always consider the city to be part of her home. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Pediatric Psychology/Health Psychology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. Her year at ACH ignited her passion for psychology practice in an interdisciplinary medical setting, particularly in specialty areas of pain management and sleep psychology.
After returning “home” to Michigan, she practiced as a psychologist in the interdisciplinary outpatient pain rehabilitation program at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for 5 years. Over the past 7 years, Dr. Byerley has worked as an outpatient psychologist at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, specializing in evaluation and treatment of youth with sleep problems, gender care needs, chronic pain, and complex medical conditions. She thrived while working as part of inter-disciplinary teams; collaboratively creating a vibrant pediatric Gender Care Clinic.
Through her clinical experiences. Dr. Byerley also discovered a passion for working with learners including medical students, residents, and fellows. She developed a strong interest in promoting health and wellness for medical providers, and proactively teaching skills to build professional resiliency, prevent clinical burnout.
Dr. Byerley lives in Rockford, MI with her wife Melissa and their 9-year-old twin daughters, Charlotte and Quinn. Her wife works as a psychologist in private practice locally. They love spending time outdoors, biking, rock hunting, and going for walks. They frequently enjoy camping trips, most often in Traverse City, Michigan. Their family has a passion for music with a growing collection of records. Dr. Byerley loves reading books, challenging herself to beat the previous year’s number of books on Goodreads.
